Premiere: Rooléh – Daylight (Toman Remix) [South Records]

As South Records continues to chart its course as one of house music’s most meticulously curated and unquestionably authentic imprints, it prepares for another hugely anticipated release as sought-after Amsterdam-based debutant Rooléh prepares to drop his ‘Daylight’ EP on 26th July, accompanied by fellow A’dam local and certified tastemaker Toman and legendary Italian underground authority Tuccillo both delivering standout remixes.

If there’s one thing Rooléh is extremely good at, it’s getting people on their feet with his productions. ‘Daylight’ is a further testament to that fact, thanks to its endlessly danceable grooves teamed with Rooléh’s signature filtered sampling and hooking musicality throughout, cultivating an instantly memorable and timeless dance record. No Art favourite Toman’s remix of ‘Daylight’ is an expectedly hip-shaking affair focusing on stripped-back rhythms, percussive progressions and eerily warped sampling.

Moving into the second half of the EP, Rooléh’s second original cut, ‘I Just,’ oozes Funk and Disco flavours from the start, synthesised into an evocative 4/4 House groove. With the addition of rambunctious percussion and subtle Latin nuances, along with playful off-beat swing and more head-turning sampling, the track evolves effortlessly into another red-hot dancefloor jam filled with insatiable energy and a pleasantly abrasive analogue edge. Bringing another stylistic approach to the table, Tuccillo’s bumpy reimagination of ‘I Just’ takes us back to the late 2000s and early 2010s dancefloors of Ibiza, before the addition of camera phones and social media and a firm reminder of the endless supply of rolling delights found on a Monday morning on the terrace at DC-10.

For George Smeddles and his South Records imprint, 2024 has gotten off to a flying start owing to a two-part solo EP, followed by a massive single and subsequent remix package featuring PIV favourites RUZE, fast-rising Londoner Duncan Thomas, and celebrated Chicago House luminary Ed Nine. Already boasting music from some of the most respected names on the planet, including trailblazing UK youngster Max Dean and celebrated PIV frontman Prunk, along with continuous support from BBC R1 and a host of the industry’s biggest DJs, South Records is fast becoming an indisputable mark of the utmost quality for cutting-edge House music.
